Hypnosis for GI Issues: An Integrative Approach

Description

In this 3 hour presentation, Dr Weisberg will discuss essentials of applying clinical hypnosis in the treatment of GI issues, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), GERD/Reflux, and Inflammatory Bowel conditions such as Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis. Participants will learn how concepts of Autonomic Dysregulation and Central Sensitization are vital to the understanding and treatment of these conditions. We will also discuss the category of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI). Specific hypnotic techniques for treating GI conditions will be discussed.

In the second part of the workshop, Dr Weisberg will discuss applications of these concepts to case material provided by workshop participants.

Objectives

  1. Participants will describe disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) and how nervous system dysregulation affects this.
  2. Participants will describe why patients with IBS often have co-morbid symptoms of headache, insomnia, or widespread pain.
  3. Participants will learn at least 2 hypnotic techniques applied to the treatment of GI issues.

Biography

Dr. Mark Weisberg is a Board-Certified Clinical Health Psychologist in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is Adjunct Community Faculty, Academic Health Center, University of Minnesota. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology. Additionally, he is a past present of the Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis and past vice-president of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

He has worked at the Minnesota Head and Neck Pain Clinic in St. Paul, MN for over 30 years, and maintains an independent practice in Minneapolis, MN.

Dr. Weisberg has been involved in clinical practice and consultation in integrative mind-body medicine and treatment of chronic physical conditions for over 30 years and teaches nationally and internationally on these topics. He has many publications in the medical, dental, and psychological scientific literature. He is the co-author of Trust Your Gut: Get Lasting Healing from IBS and Other Chronic Digestive Problems Without Drugs (Conari Press), a consumer book on integrative treatment of digestive disorders.
