Hypnosis: State of the Science

The following program offered by the Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis has been submitted for 6 CEUs towards ASCH membership and/or certification

Description

This workshop aims to introduce attendees to the science of hypnosis, with a focus on state-of-the-art research. The workshop will comprise four subsections on distinct topics, including contemporary research on hypnotic responding and the cognitive neuroscience of hypnosis; the relations between hypnosis, suggestion and psychopathology; current state of the evidence regarding the clinical efficacy of hypnosis; and the relevance of hypnosis and suggestion for scientific research on, and clinical applications of, psychedelics. Each subsection will conclude with a brief consideration of the implications for therapeutic applications of hypnosis. Upon completing the module, attendees will have a good understanding of contemporary developments in the field and be positioned to critically evaluate this work.

Biography

Devin B. Terhune, PhD, is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Experimental Psychology in the Department of Psychology in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, & Neuroscience at King’s College London. He completed his PhD on the cognitive neuroscience of hypnosis at Lund University and was previously a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford and a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. His research draws on methods and theories from cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, and psychiatry with an aim to characterize different features of awareness, with a focus on dissociative states, and how they can be modulated using verbal suggestion and pharmacological agents.
