MSCH 2021 Rosenthal Retreat

Hypnosis in the Art and Science of Psychotherapy

Delle M. Jacobs LICSW LMFT

Description

Hypnosis in the Art and Science of Psychotherapy introduces the evolving scientific theory and research upon the art of psychotherapy over the last 50 years. Clinical hypnosis amplifies this integration of science and art, allowing it to become a more powerful tripartite model of Mind-Body-Brain psychotherapy.

Leaving behind the world of the DSM, insurance requirements, the prescription of behavioral health, and the narrow confines of CBT, we will explore the importance of the primary relationship in psychotherapy and divergent perspectives from which to orient to psychotherapy. Interdisciplinary theory and research, particularly, interpersonal neurobiology and the findings on brain laterality, shift the emphasis to right brain processes of the nonverbal, implicit and the unconscious has risen again as research recognizes the qualities of non-conscious material in the rapidly processing right brain.

A primary emphasis will be enhancing clinical skills of the practitioner and potentiating the “Self,” of the therapist as we enter realms of creativity, imagination, and novelty. Clinical hypnosis will be the featured star in the art of psychotherapy, offering mind-body-brain communication, empowering people to build skills and improve health and well-being. We will investigate specific applications of hypnosis in insight and exploratory techniques and in uses of self-hypnosis.

Hypnosis in the Art and Science of Psychotherapy is experiential, offering dynamic presentations interspersed with opportunities for interactive discussion, dyadic practice, demos, and group exercises. The workshop is designed for mental health professionals and is relevant to those interested in enhancing relationship skills, using self-hypnosis, and brief intervention methods.
